Cain is also known as 'Cain the Elder'.
He is the only living human being left in the bloodline of the Horadric mages. Deckard Cain is also brother-in-law of Aiden, Warrior from Diablo I and Dark Wanderer. Cain has featured in all the three editions of the Diablo games. As a player, Cain is the person you would be turning to for all the advice. Cain also initiates the Diablo Quests and Archbishop Lazarus in Diablo 1. He initiates several quests in 2 also. Cain has the ability to identify items for both free and for a price. Cain identifies the items for free if he has been rescued. Deckard Cain is descended from the same Jered Cain who had imprisoned Diablo 200 years before. There is no one who has been schooled in the most obscure history and lore of the arcane.

The only other survivor after Tristram was destroyed was the Dark Wanderer. The demons did not kill Cain. They left him in a cage in the center of town. They expected him to die there. But the gamer rescues Cain and Cain accompanies the player through the quests. After the rescue, Cain identifies items for free.

Deckard Cain is a great character in Diablo 3 also.
His journal has been published and it details the events of Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 in brief. There are references that Cain was an elder from Tristram and he was the lore keeper without a lot of knowledge about the outside world. There are implications that Cain came to know about Worldstone only after the Diablo 2 ended.

His residences include Tristram, Rogue Encampment, Lut Gholein, Kurast Docks, Pandemonium Fortress, and Harrogath. The start quests for Cain include Archbishop Lazarus, Diablo, Sisters to the Slaughter, Horadric Staff, Arcane Sanctuary, The Summoner, Seven Tombs, Khalim's Will, Blackened Temple, The Guardian, Fallen Angel, Hell's Forge. In Diablo 3 series, the character is portrayed by Michael Gough.
